vdw VarioSand in basalt grey is a ready-to-use jointing sand with a hybrid binder for unbound concrete block paving. It is swept in dry, compacted, and then mixed with water to create a slurry. It is suitable for narrow joints of 2 to 4 mm. According to the manufacturer, the finished joint is water-permeable and can be driven on after approximately three days.
Typical uses and points to check before processing:
The ready-to-use sand is swept in dry without mixing and is walkable after 3 hours; for wider joints from 5 mm on trafficked areas there is the 2K paving joint mortar vdw 800 .
The joint width, type of covering and substructure are crucial, as VarioSand is only designed for narrow joints in unbound construction.
The manufacturer estimates 1.5–1.7 kg per liter of joint space, and approximately 3–4 kg/m² for concrete block paving and a joint depth of 40 mm.
Process the sand at temperatures between 8 and 30 °C and protect the area from rain for at least 3 hours and from frost for at least 2 days.
After sweeping, the area is compacted, thoroughly moistened section by section, and sanded again; prolonged dampness in the joint damages the material, and a test area reveals possible haze on the stone.
